Tone up! – Getting those tones sounding right
When learning Thai, one of the biggest problems is getting the tones right. Most of us learn by listening to and then imitating a teacher or other native Thai teacher.
There are problems with this approach. If we have difficulty hearing the tones correctly, if we mishear our own attempts, it leads to problems. Indeed many of us will have wondered why we are told our tones are wrong but we are convinced that we have imitated the sound exactly.
Stuart Jay Raj has produced a video showing us a totally different way to think about tones and so produce them more accurately. Don’t concentrate on the sound emitted but to think more about what our throat is doing to cause the tones.
This is part of Stuart’s Thai Bites series.
