Listening to… TV dramas
In this series I have tried to offer some pointers to ways of getting some listening practice even if you are not in Thailand. Today we will look at use of TV dramas. Here YouTube is your friend, but not the only source.
The great thing about dramas is that there is a storyline to help you to understand what is being said. You are able at times to predict and there is plenty of context to help.
If you are a fairly advanced learner, then just playing the video through online is feasible. But for the rest of us, it is possible to listen to a whole video and pick up no more then the word Krap, or Ka. I recommend downloading the video to play on your own machine. to download I use this program. There are though many others available
YTD will then convert the file to an MP4 format playable on your computer or smartphone.
My usual routine is:
1. Watch the video through at normal speed, trying to pick out some of the dialogue but concentrating more on getting the idea of the story.
2. Watching small segments through repeatedly trying to understand as much as possible of the dialogue. It is sometimes necessary to reduce the speed of playback in order ti distinguish words which I note down. Once I have enough of the dialogue to grasp the meaning, I move on to the next segment.
3. Finally the video can be watched in its entirety. hopefully understanding more this time.
The choice of the drama is important, it must be interesting to you for a start. But then there is the question of subtitles or not, and if there are subtitles should they be in Thai or English (or whatever your mother tongue is) My view is that subtitles in English will not add anything to my ability to listen to Thai. I am not a fast enough reader of Thai to be able to use the subtitles in Thai fast enough to keep up and so they become a distraction. But we all learn in our own way.
A superb series to watch is Hormones. The story lines are good as is the acting whichall helps. They can be found easily on YouTube with or without subtitles
However that may not be to your taste. Many people prefer soap operas ละคร These to are freely available on YouTube. Here is a random example
