I got the chance to play around a bit with the Learn Thai from a White Guy app and now that it is officially released on the Google Play store (Android OS), I can tell you right off the bat; This is a great app!
First of all, the interface is as clean as it can get. I did test this on an HTC one and it looks pretty great, simple, yet intuitive. It isn’t also that big in size when it comes to the amount of space it takes on your cellphone or tablet -around 6 megabytes- and oh yeah, last but not least, this program is a free download!
So what can this app do for you as a Thai language learner? First of all this is a great tool for beginners to actually be able to listen to how Thai consonants and vowels sound when spoken without having to ask your wife or girlfriend all the time. The recordings are clean, professionally recorded samples and by just tapping the vowel/consonant on the screen, you can hear it pronounced by a real Thai (female I have to add) native speaker. So if you are the kind of person who wants to listen to native samples of how these vowels and consonants are pronounced, this app is for you!
This app teaches you consonants and vowels. Anything else? Yes it also teaches you numbers. Many Thai learners (me included) do slack on learning numbers but with this app you can study them and drill them, so if you are the kind of person who knows the alphabet but not the numbers, well this app is for you!
By the way, users will also be able to test their knowledge by just tapping the drills option at the menu. Short quizzes can be done and at the end of the ride your score is calculated and you can give it another shot.
There is more! When you click settings you can select a font as well. So maybe you are having issues with some of those more modern pesky fonts in Thai? No problem, go to settings, choose a font you like and use it for the exercises and lessons to get more familiar with them! A lot of fonts are included such as “Book Akhanake, FT Meuang BL, Rai Ngan, WDB Bangma etcetera, so check them all out! So if you are the kind of person who can read thai, knows the numbers, this app is still useful for you as you can practice your thai font reading as well!
To me personally, this is the kind of app I always wanted to have whenever I was sitting in a train, bus, taxi, รถแดง or whatever. It is great for beginners to listen to the recordings and doing the tone drills but it is also nice for those who can’t read the crazy modern fonts so that you can practice those. It is also great for practicing numbers.
To conclude; this is a really nice and handy tool for thai learners, it is well developed, a lot of thought has been put into it and did I mention it is free? To me personally, if you have an android handset or tablet (it will be ported to iOS as well) there is no reason not to get this app really. Check it out, you won’t regret it!
