Learn Thai Podcast.
We were granted the opportunity to check things out at learn thai podcast and we were pretty impressed. Read on!
So Learn Thai Podcast is to Thai language learning what lynda.com would be to graphic or webdesigners. It’s basically a website that hosts videotutorials online so that you can study from wherever the heck you want. Yes that’s right! You could give it a shot from behind your PC or you could take your tablet or other mobile device to a coffeeshop and start cranking there! No schedules, no teachers, just you, your own spare time, a drink and maybe some buddies to hang around with. It works a bit different than other learning methods but it might be THE solution to people who are shy or for those who have issues socializing, like myself per example.
The first thing that I want to mention is the website itself. It looks great. Period. I really loved the illustrations, it all looks clean, neat and very well done. I heard that Learn Thai Podcast changed the website quite a bit over the past few years but it looks great. Check it out if you haven’t! Whoever is in charge of the graphic design gets a beer whenever I meet that person in real life.
One of the great points I also want to mention are the options and things you can do on the website itself. Yes it’s a lot! Aside from watching and listening to videos, you can also download all these videos, or you can just download the audio alone (put them on your mp3 player or listen to it while driving a car) and you can download the transcripts as well. For each and every video! Imagine the work that was put into that with over 800 videos available!
So again, the audio would be great to put on your cellphone or mp3 player to listen to while sitting in a bus I reckon.
A lot of lessons on on the website available to put to good use. From beginners to intermediate all the way down to more advanced learners. There are also video tutorials for people who don’t know the Thai script yet so you learn how to read and write as well. I also want to mention that especially the female thai speaker (from now on on we will refer to her as “the voice”) is one of the clearest voices you will ever hear while listening to native Thais. It’s not a punishment to listen to her at all. A really pleasant voice to listen to.
The absolute best in my opinon were the conversational parts. Thai native conversations, breakdown, translations, slowmotions, it’s all there. So you see a video of a Thai person having a conversation or just talking about their company or another given subject. The sequence will then be repeated and it will be translated, slowed down as well. There are also explanations as you watch. What’s not to like?
Here is a screenshot of the curriculum so you know what to expect about the lessons;
The Vocabulary Game
Oh and one other thing is the vocabulary trainer. You can read a bunch of flashcards and when you flip the card over you can listen to “the voice” saying it out loud. There is a vocabulary trainer for every lesson on the webpage and you can navigate fairly easy by using the dropdown menu at the top of the page. It is something that might be overlooked but serves its purpose.
Keith Williams added the following:
I used this a couple of years back – a previous version. It has been seriously reworked with a better structure. The materials are absolutely first class. The Thai voice over is extremely clear and easy to understand. Every conversation is translated, both word for word and for the overall sentence meaning. It is then analysed carefully with sufficient repetitions, both at normal speed and more slowly. It is this process of presenting the conversation, breaking it down and carefully analysing, repeating and rebuilding sentences and then conversations that makes it easy to understand and learn from. The vocabulary, grammar and reading/writing parts of each cycle are dealt with in the same way.
It is not necessary to sit at the computer to study. You can download all the videos and sound only files for your tablet and smart phone, meaning that commute into work can be put to very good use!! There is something there for learners at all levels and considering the great wealth of very professional materials, it is not expensive. Since starting this review, I have gone back to using some of the materials and can recommend that you give it a try.
You will learn something from this if you are a Thai learner. Tons of content, tons of options, tons of lessons, tons of everything! Go get it and check it out yourself!
